PLAYLAND, Vancouver: May 3-18, 2011

Can a math video game compete with free, unlimited roller coaster rides?  You bet it can! This month we held the 3rd Annual MathAmaze Tournaments at Playland during the PNE's Science of Fun days.   More than 23,000 students attended Playland and more than 1,200 participated in the MathAmaze tournaments.  Congratulations to all the tournament winners and thanks to all of you who participated.  We hope you liked the MathAmaze puzzle prizes we gave out this year--they were tricky!

GRMS (Groupe des responsables en mathématique au secondaire) Congress, May 26, 2011

Teachers attending the GRMS educators conference in Trois-Rivières, Quebec were treated to demonstration of how MathAmaze allows them to administer the game with their students.  The new room management and reporting features being developed for MathAmaze make it possible for teachers to track what areas are proving difficult for their students. The demonstration for hundreds of teachers, numeracy coordinators and pedagogy professionals allowed them to give feedback on their needs and how the game could be used by them as a learning support resource.

24 Hours of Science tournament, May 6, 2011
The "24 hours of science", this year at Gabrielle-Roy library in Quebec City, is the Quebec science and technology event par excellence for people of all ages.  The MathAmaze team introduced a class of sixth grade students to the idea of playing at mathematics through a mini-tournament. At the beginning, the students were skeptical... By the end, the students wouldn't let us close down the event! They complained they hadn't had enough time to play the game and wanted us to stay longer so they could continue playing at math.

Girls and Science an explosive duo!, Feb 19, 2011

Video games aren't only for boys.  The proof? At the Laval University event  "Les filles et les sciences, un duo explosif!", our MathAmaze tournament was a big hit with the girls attending.  All day long, it was a raucous affair, as they laughed, shouted and loved the experience, as they raced through the virtual race course, launching bananas along the way.
